The 27th Letter
Typeface Study, 2020
Final version for the “ng” letter
Final version of the sarcastic symbol
The English alphabet has consisted of the same 26 letters for centuries. In the twenty-first century, these letters could be considered universal. Still, many letters exist elsewhere in the world. For this assignment, I decided to create a unique letter form for the Filipino letter “ng” and a punctuation mark that represents sarcasm for Helvetica.
Studies and Sketches
To understand the typeface better, I printed the alphabet in Helvetica and traced the letters. I then made notes of what makes Helvetica a unique typeface.
After researching, I began to sketch out different letterforms. I took the base forms of different letters and combined them in different ways.
The New Alphabet
To showcase the new letterforms, they were integrated with the regular alphabet in Helvetica.
